Hi! I’m Sarah, owner of Chasing Creative, and as a Southwest Florida family photographer, I’ve helped countless families capture their memories in this beautiful area. Here are my top tips for a stress-free photoshoots with toddlers!
Photographing toddlers is always an adventure—they’re curious, full of energy, and occasionally unpredictable! With the right preparation and my relaxed approach, we can create an enjoyable experience for everyone and capture beautiful memories. Here are my top tips for stress-free photoshoots with toddlers:
1. Go With the Flow During Photoshoots with Toddlers
When working with toddlers, flexibility is your best friend. While those picture-perfect, everyone-smiling-at-the-camera shots are lovely, they’re not always realistic with little ones. Instead of forcing poses, I focus on prompting families with fun activities.
Simple games like “jump the wave,” “follow the leader,” or having parents playfully run after their toddler create authentic smiles and laughter. I also keep things moving—whether it’s shifting locations or starting a new activity—to match their short attention spans. A happy toddler equals great photos!
2. Prepare for a Workout
Photographing toddlers is no leisurely activity—it’s a workout! Toddlers love to move, so I embrace their energy with plenty of prompts that involve activity:
Family walks: Holding hands and strolling together creates beautiful, natural shots.
Lifting or tossing: Parents tossing their little one in the air often leads to big, happy giggles.
Cuddles and spins: Snuggling or twirling with a toddler in your arms captures sweet, candid moments.
Be prepared to run, crouch, and play—it’s all part of the fun!
3. Prevent Hangry Meltdowns
Toddlers are happiest when they’re well-fed. I recommend giving them a snack before the session to keep their energy up and avoid hunger-fueled tantrums. For longer sessions, bringing non-messy snacks (like crackers or applesauce pouches) can be helpful to keep them content between shots.
4. Leave the Toys at Home
If your toddler has a favorite toy, doll, or comfort item, it’s best to leave it at home unless you want it featured in the photos. If they’re holding it when they get out of the car, telling them they can’t bring it can cause a meltdown. Avoid the struggle by keeping those items out of sight from the start.
5. Consider the Time of Year when Booking Photoshoots with Toddlers
In Southwest Florida, sunset provides the most stunning lighting for photos. During late fall and winter, sunset happens earlier, making it easier to schedule sessions before bedtime.
But don’t worry if your session is during the summer when the sun sets later. Kids often do exceptionally well past their usual bedtime when they’re somewhere fun and exciting, like the beach. If a later sunset is unavoidable, trust that the new environment will keep their curiosity piqued and their energy up.
With toddlers, flexibility and preparation are key to a successful session. By going with the flow, staying active, and being mindful of their needs, you can turn the unpredictability into an opportunity for authentic, heartfelt moments. Let’s make your session one to remember—meltdowns and all!
